About Universal Image to ICO Converter Tool

What is an ICO File?

An ICO file is an image file format used for computer icons in Microsoft Windows. ICO files contain one or more small images at multiple sizes and color depths, allowing them to be scaled appropriately for different display scenarios. Unlike standard image formats, ICO files can store multiple resolutions in a single file, making them ideal for icons that need to look sharp at any size.

How to Use Our Image to ICO Converter

Our advanced tool makes converting any image to ICO simple and powerful:

  1. Select Images: Click the "Select Images" button or drag and drop your files into the upload area. We support JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, and SVG formats.
  2. Customize Settings: Choose which icon size you want to include (only one can be selected at a time) and adjust advanced options like quality, transparency preservation, and aspect ratio handling.
  3. Use Presets (optional): Quickly select common size combinations with our Favicon, Desktop, and All Sizes presets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I only select one size at a time?
We've designed the tool to focus on one size at a time to simplify the conversion process. If you need multiple sizes, you can run multiple conversions or use one of our presets that automatically selects common size combinations.
Can I convert transparent PNG files to ICO with transparency preserved?
Yes! Our tool has an option to "Preserve transparency" which will maintain the alpha channel when converting PNG files. This is enabled by default when working with PNGs. Note that JPG files don't support transparency, so this option has no effect on them.
How do I handle non-square images when converting to ICO?
We provide three options: 1) "Force square crop" will crop your image to a square aspect ratio, 2) "Add padding" will maintain your original aspect ratio by adding transparent (or white for JPG) padding, or 3) You can leave both unchecked to stretch the image to square. The choice depends on your specific needs and the image content.
What's the best size for a Windows application icon?
For Windows applications, we recommend using 256x256 as it provides the best quality for modern displays. Windows will automatically scale it down when smaller sizes are needed.
Can I convert SVG vector images to ICO?
Yes! Our tool has special handling for SVG files. The vector image will be rasterized at your selected target size, resulting in crisp icons. This is particularly useful because you can create one SVG file and generate icons at any resolution.
Is there a limit to how many images I can convert at once?
There's no hard limit, but very large batches may slow down your browser. For best performance, we recommend converting up to 10 images at a time. All selected images will be combined into a single ICO file with your selected size.
What's the maximum size for an ICO file?
The ICO format officially supports images up to 256x256 pixels, but our tool extends this to support 512x512 pixels as well, which can be useful for high-resolution displays. Very large ICO files may not be supported by all Windows versions.
